1: A method of writing in which an insecure attention whore tries to make it seem as though they care about the person to whom they're writing the letter when really they're just trying to draw attention to themselves.

  * e.g.,  ... "I'd send a closed letter, but I'm an attention whore so I'm sending an open letter. Fame through someone else, here I come!" 

 [ "Soviet letter opener machinery" ]

1: a humorous way of referring to the Berlin Wall. It effectively acted as a "letter opener," preventing communication and movement between the two sides.

  * e.g.,  ... We were expecting letters from our family in the USSR, but never heard from them, due to the "Soviet letter opener machinery" keeping people from emigrating and preventing brain drain.
